WC bronze for stopping Van der Weijden
Annouk van der Weijden finished her skating career last Saturday with bronze at the World Allround Championships in Amsterdam. The 31-year-old skater of Team Plantina held behind Antoinette de Jong in a direct duel on the closing 5 kilometer.

"This is my best achievement ever", Van der Weijden jubilated afterwards next to the outside ice at the Olympic Stadium. "To finish my career in this way is great way, and this is also a special competition that many people will remember."

The Dutch champion allround and number four of the Olympic 5000 meters in Korea made her last season her best. On Tuesday she announced to stop with top skating. "It has been beautiful and still is, but it's done," she said. The last performance does not change that. "I am very happy to finish with a podium place at the World Championships."

Van der Weijdens World Open Championships started Friday with a tenth place in the 500 meters. Two fourth places (3000 and 1500 meters) and the bronze on the 5000 earned her a well-deserved farewell medal.
